The Retreat by TDC is a week-long academically engaging experience focusing heavily on Islamic knowledge and is geared towards community development and leadership. It offers qualified and credentialed instructors who will focus teach topics surrounding the American Muslim Identity, its history, and it’s current challenges.

What to Expect?:

By registering for and attending the Retreat by TDC, you will have exposure to sessions dealing with Islamic Sciences, including Hadith, ‘Aqeedah, Fiqh, spirituality, and Islamic History. You will also have sessions on Community Development and Leadership.

When and where it take place?

The Retreat by TDC will start on Friday, December 28th, 2018 at Asr time (03:45 PM) and will conclude on Friday, January 4th, 2019 at Maghrib time (05:30 PM). The Retreat’s Courses will start daily at 07:30 AM  and end by Maghrib prayer during the rest of the days of the retreat.

It will take place at The River Oaks Islamic Center located at 3110 Eastside St, Houston, TX 77098 (Google Map).

How much does it cost?

The program in its entirety consists of over 82 hours of instructions and will cost $350.00 per student for the whole week. The admissions fee is geared primarily for covering the expenses of the program. It does not include food or other lodging accommodations. Bonus Course: Between Science and Fiqh: Breastmilk, Premies, and Adoption

Course Description:

There are two main topics for this course. The first topic will explore the scientific findings and the Fiqh rulings surrounding the issue of “donated” breast milk of other women for children born prematurely. The panel includes two Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) doctors, Dr. Ahmadi and Dr. Placencia, to address this particular issue. The second topic relates the adoption of children. We will discuss frequently asked Fiqh and medical questions about the adoption of children, specifically about breastfeeding and other related matters. Finally, Sarah Haider Alam of New Star Kafala and Cultivating Families will come in for the social side to talk about adoption and the need in the Muslim community.

Shaykh Ammar AlShukry

Shaykh Ammar is an AlMaghrib instructor who began seeking knowledge with a wide variety of teachers in the Quran, Hadith, Aqeedah, Fiqh, and Tafseer. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Islamic Sciences with AlMaghrib Institute. He is also known for his ability to touch the hearts and minds of his attendees irrespective of their age. Ammar is well known for his thought-provoking and heart-moving poetry with classics such as “Jannah”, “Until I See You”, and “The Witr Du’a”.

Shaykh Mahad Qamar & Shaykha Safiya Ravat

Both, Shaykh Mahad and Shaykha Safiya, completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Fiqh and Usul ul Fiqh from the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) and are currently pursuing their Master’s degrees in Pastoral Counseling in Marriage and Family Therapy. The couple has been teaching classes and offering seminars for almost 10 years on subjects including the Tajweed, women’s Fiqh and marriage preparation, the life of the Prophet Muhammad (s) and the Arabic language.

Shaykh Joe Bradford

Shaykh Joe accepted Islam in 1991 and dedicated his life to studying the tradition ever since. He holds a graduate degree in Islamic law from the University of Medinah and works as an adviser to institutions and private individuals. He has authored several papers and entries in the areas of Zakat Law and Islamic Finance. Sh. Joe has served as an imam and a community servant in several localities around the US, engaging in interfaith and outreach activities.

Shaykh Abdullah Ashraf

Shaykh Abdullah graduated from the Islamic Unversity of Madina in 2014 with a degree in Islamic Law and is currently finishing his masters in Comparative Fiqh from the same university. In addition to having memorized the Quran at the age of 17, he also holds multiple ijazaat in a variety of subjects including Hadith, Fiqh, and Tafseer. The shaykh currently lives in Madinah where he settled since 2004 with his parents.

Shaykh Arsalan Majid

Shaykh Arsalan is a Houstonian who has engaged himself studying the religion from a young age. He memorized the Quran at Madrasah Islamiyyah in Houston, TX at the age of 20 and pursued multiple ijaazahs in Hafs thereafter. He completed a Bachelors of Science in Psychology while minoring in biology from the University of Houston with plans to attend medical school but decided to pursue further Islamic Studies at the Islamic University of Medinah. For six years, he engaged in intensive study, both in a formal university setting with his required classes but also in the private and public classes of local scholars where he memorized and covered multiple classical texts in various sciences. He graduated with a Bachelors in Islamic Law and Legal Theory in 2018 and plans to work with the local Houston Community in the near future.

Ustadh Fahad Tasleem

Ustadh Fahad is the founder of DC Seminary and Head of US Outreach for iERA (the Islamic Education & Research Academy). His diverse study & research interests include Quranic Studies, Dawah, Islamic & Comparative Theology, Behavioral Economics, Economic History, and Arabic Linguistics. Fahad holds a bachelors in Economics from Michigan State University and a Masters in Business Taxation from the University of Southern California. He studied Arabic at Georgetown University and is currently studying in the graduate program in Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Texas at Austin with a focus on Islamic Theology.
